A Simi Valley man suspected of attempted murder turned a routine hospital stay into a violent confrontation, attacking a police officer who was supervising him. The officer fired her weapon, stopping the threat.
On July 2, Simi Valley police responded to a domestic dispute call. They found Luis Ramirez-Macias and his wife with stab wounds. Investigators determined Ramirez-Macias had attempted to kill his wife before injuring himself. Both were hospitalized.
While at Los Robles Hospital, Ramirez-Macias grabbed a glass medication vial, broke it, and used the shard to hurt himself. He then attacked Officer Carly Grice, who was guarding him. In response, Officer Grice shot the suspect.
Ramirez-Macias received medical treatment and was held at the hospital for several days. Upon release, he was booked into the Ventura County Main Jail. The extent of Officer Grice's injuries was not disclosed. She joined the department in 2021.
The incident occurred in Ventura County, at Los Robles Hospital in Thousand Oaks. Simi Valley is a city within Ventura County, about 40 miles northwest of Los Angeles.
Domestic violence incidents often escalate to extreme violence. Officer-involved shootings in hospital settings are rare but underscore the dangers law enforcement face even in controlled environments.
Ramirez-Macias faces charges related to attempted murder and assault on a police officer. The investigation is ongoing. The Simi Valley Police Department has not released further details.
