A 33-year-old Ventura man was arrested over the weekend after he allegedly kidnapped a woman he met at a bar on July 25 and attempted to kill her in a remote area of Santa Paula. The attack was interrupted by a nearby resident, enabling the woman to flee and report the crime to police.

The Incident Unfolds

According to the Ventura Police Department, the woman reported meeting a man at a bar in downtown Ventura on the night of July 25, just after 10 p.m. They left together in his vehicle, but during the drive, he became angry and began physically attacking her, threatening to kill her. The suspect then drove to a remote location off Wheeler Canyon Road in Santa Paula, where he drew a knife and cut her while continuing his threats.

A neighbor heard the struggle and intervened, causing the suspect to stop and allowing the woman to escape. The woman eventually made her way back to the Ventura Police Station around 10 p.m. to report the incident, according to Cmdr. Trenner Marchetti. She got a ride to the station, but police did not know from whom. Paramedics transported her to Ventura County Medical Center for treatment of significant injuries.

Charges Filed

Police identified the suspect as Ignacio Anzaldo, 33, of Ventura. He was located and arrested without incident in the 400 block of Imperial Avenue in Ventura. Anzaldo was booked on multiple charges: attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, kidnapping, false imprisonment by violence, domestic violence (corporal injury to a spouse), destruction of evidence, and criminal threats. He is being held on $1 million bail and is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court on July 28.

Investigation Ongoing

The investigation is ongoing. Detectives are asking anyone with additional information to contact Sergeant Fabian Gutierrez of the Major Crimes Unit at (805) 339-4428.

Local California Context

Santa Paula is a small city in Ventura County, known for its agricultural roots and quiet neighborhoods. The attack occurred in a remote area near Wheeler Canyon Road, which is typically secluded. Incidents of violent crime in such rural parts of the county are uncommon but highlight the importance of community vigilance and rapid police response.

Background

While Ventura County generally enjoys lower crime rates compared to larger urban areas, isolated violent incidents occasionally occur. In recent years, law enforcement has emphasized the need for residents to report suspicious activity, especially in remote locations. This case underscores the potential dangers individuals may face when leaving public places with strangers.

Conclusion

Authorities continue to investigate this disturbing attack. The quick thinking of a neighbor and the victim's determination to seek help led to the suspect's arrest. The Ventura Police Department urges anyone with information to come forward. Community members are reminded to stay alert and prioritize personal safety.
