A Port Hueneme man has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for sexually abusing a child he lived with, along with related drug and firearm offenses. The Ventura County District Attorney's Office announced the sentence, highlighting the courage of the victim who came forward.
Mathew Gomez, a resident of Port Hueneme, pleaded guilty on June 15 to three felony counts of forcible lewd acts on a child, one felony count of unlawful firearm possession, and possession of a controlled substance for sales. The court also found that the child victim was particularly vulnerable, an aggravating factor that increased the severity of the sentence. According to the Ventura County District Attorney's Office, Gomez sexually abused the child dozens of times at a Moorpark home they shared and at his residence in Port Hueneme between April 2021 and May 2023. The sexual assault survivor shared the abuse with a trusted adult, who then relayed the information to law enforcement.
Deputies arrested Gomez after a search of his vehicle uncovered a significant quantity of drugs, drug paraphernalia, and an unregistered semi-automatic pistol equipped with a high-capacity magazine. The Ventura County District Attorney's Office confirmed these details.
Deputy District Attorney Morgan Luna, who prosecuted the case, commended the victim's bravery: “The courage it took for this victim to come forward ended years of abuse and ensured the defendant would be held accountable. This sentence reflects the seriousness of these crimes and our commitment to protecting children and seeking justice for survivors.”
