Two people were pronounced dead after firefighters found them during a response to a structure fire near Lake of the Pines, a community in Nevada County. CAL FIRE NEU and Higgins Fire Protection District crews worked to contain the blaze and secure the scene.
According to The Union, first responders were dispatched to a reported structure fire involving one-tenth of an acre of vegetation in the Higgins area, just outside Lake of the Pines.
When crews arrived, they found about 25% of the home involved in the fire. Two residents were unaccounted for at the time. Firefighters searched the property and located two victims, who were pronounced dead at the scene.
Fire crews achieved knockdown and remained on scene for about three hours, extinguishing remaining hotspots and smoke affecting both the structure and the surrounding wildland.
