Deputies in San Bernardino County are investigating a violent confrontation near Hesperia in which a man was nearly run over and then shot at after confronting strangers on his property.
The incident unfolded just before 8 p.m. Thursday in the 4600 block of Summit Valley Road, an unincorporated area just outside Hesperia. Residents spotted several people in a gray Chevrolet Traverse on their property and confronted them, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.
The group left, but a short time later a black Jeep Cherokee returned. "The subjects left, but a short time later a black Jeep Cherokee arrived and attempted to strike one of the victims with their vehicle," said department spokeswoman Amber Hutton. "The occupants of the jeep then fired towards the victim before fleeing the location."
The man targeted in the attack was not hurt. Authorities have not released a motive or detailed suspect descriptions.
Summit Valley Road is a remote corridor in the Victor Valley area of San Bernardino County, near the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. The 4600 block sits outside Hesperia city limits, so sheriff's deputies from the Victor Valley station handle calls there. Incidents involving guns and vehicles are rare enough to draw attention but have occurred in other high desert neighborhoods.
The attack echoes other cases of escalated anger across California. In Carlsbad, a 49-year-old man pleaded not guilty Wednesday to attempted murder and assault charges after allegedly attacking two people and stabbing a passenger multiple times during a road rage confrontation, according to ABC7. That case is separate but highlights how quickly disputes on roads or properties can turn violent.
