An Oroville man was arrested Tuesday after police say he stabbed three family members and a family dog in a residence on the 1900 block of D Street. The Oroville Police Department responded to a 911 call from an adult woman who reported she had been stabbed by her grandson. While officers were en route, dispatchers learned that two additional victims had also been stabbed.
Responding officers found the three victims in different areas of the home and immediately provided emergency medical aid. Meanwhile, a separate 911 call came in reporting that a man with an apparent dog-bite injury was at a nearby market on Myers Street. The man matched the description of the suspect, 22-year-old Johnny Stanchfield of Oroville, and was taken into custody at gunpoint without incident.
Stanchfield then received medical treatment for his own injuries before being booked into jail.
All three victims were transported to Enloe Medical Center, where they underwent surgery for multiple stab wounds. Police confirmed they are now in stable condition. The family dog also sustained multiple lacerations and required surgery at a local veterinary clinic; it is also in stable condition. Additional charges related to the animal's injuries may be filed.
Stanchfield was arrested and booked on three counts of attempted murder, two counts of violating a criminal protective order, and one count of violating probation. The investigation remains ongoing.
Oroville is a city in Butte County, California, with a population of about 20,000. Violent crimes, particularly stabbings, are rare in this community. The incident has drawn attention to domestic violence issues, as Stanchfield was already the restrained party in active court protection orders involving two of the victims.
Court records indicate that Stanchfield had an active arrest warrant for a separate violent act at the time of the stabbing. The protective orders and prior warrant suggest a history of violent behavior. Police have not released details of the prior incident but confirmed that the warrant was unrelated to the stabbing.
