A tragic collision in Huntington Beach Saturday night left a young motorcyclist dead after his Harley-Davidson struck the rear of an Amazon delivery truck. The incident, which occurred in Orange County, has prompted an investigation by local authorities.
According to the Huntington Beach Police Department, officers responded to the intersection of Beach Boulevard and Slater Avenue at approximately 8:30 p.m. on July 12, 2026. Both vehicles were traveling north on Beach Boulevard when the motorcyclist lost control of his Harley-Davidson and hit the back of the gray Amazon truck. The preliminary investigation indicates that the motorcycle went out of control and struck the rear of the truck while both were traveling northbound on Beach south of Slater.
When officers arrived, they found the motorcyclist unconscious on the roadway. Paramedics rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The northbound lanes of Beach Boulevard, between Speer Drive and Slater, were closed to traffic for about two hours following the crash.
The motorcyclist has been identified as Griffin Patrick Lotts, 22, of Costa Mesa, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department. An online profile indicates Lotts was taking business classes at Orange Coast College while working toward a bachelor's degree and had previously worked as an after-school teacher at the YMCA in Huntington Beach from August 2025 to February 2026. The driver of the Amazon truck, a 27-year-old man from Santa Ana, was uninjured and has been cooperating with investigators. Police said impairment does not appear to be a factor for the truck driver, but it remains unclear if the motorcyclist was impaired.
