Orange County prosecutors have charged a 36-year-old man with murder after he allegedly used a hammer to kill his mother at her Laguna Beach home. Safford James Wolfson faces one count of murder with a deadly weapon enhancement for the death of Angela Caprioli, 61.
Wolfson appeared remotely for his arraignment on Monday from his bed at Mission Hospital, where he remains in intensive care. His attorney, Brian Gurwitz, told the judge that Wolfson is still in the ICU. The defendant, bearded and with long hair, appeared alert and answered the judge, “Ah, yes, ma’am,” when asked if he could hear the proceedings.
Judge Maria D. Hernandez set bail at $1 million over prosecutors’ request for no bail. Wolfson did not enter a plea. Laguna Beach police officers were present at the hospital, and the judge ordered the Orange County Sheriff’s Department to take over custody while he awaits trial.
The attack occurred in a quiet residential area of Laguna Beach. Neighbors told local media that Wolfson had been living with his mother for about six months and that caretakers frequently visited the home. Caprioli, a resident of Maine, had arrived just a week before her death to drop off a TV and other items, according to a neighbor.
Wolfson was initially named a person of interest and later arrested on July 23. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive. The case highlights the tragic intersection of family violence and mental health concerns, though no specific information about Wolfson’s condition has been confirmed.
