A Saturday morning fire at a Davis apartment complex has left one person dead, prompting a joint investigation by local police and fire authorities. The blaze, which broke out at the Owendale Mutual Housing Community, was contained quickly, but tragically claimed a life. According to the Davis Fire Department, only one person was in the apartment at the time of the fire.
Davis Fire Department Chief Paul Swanson reported that crews arrived at 3023 Albany Ave., apartment 129, at 8:16 a.m. on July 11, 2026. They found a fire in a bedroom, which was quickly extinguished. Inside, firefighters discovered one person deceased. A dog was rescued and transported to a nearby veterinary hospital for treatment. The fire did not spread to any adjacent structures, and no fire personnel were injured. A passerby reported the fire to authorities, and no other people were known to be in the residence at the time of the fire. The victim was later identified by the Yolo County Coroner's office as Kataurus Dontay Bryant, 48. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday to determine his cause of death.
According to Davis Fire Department Battalion Chief Matt Galloway, the first fire crew on scene forced entry into the apartment and discovered Bryant in a rear bedroom. Galloway said that fire damage “was limited to the bedroom, and other apartments were unaffected. There was some active fire, but it was mostly smoke.”
The Owendale Mutual Housing Community is located in South Davis, near Arnold Street and Covell Boulevard, close to the Chiles Road turnoff. Mutual Housing California, the developer and management company, expressed deep sadness over the incident, offering condolences to the resident's loved ones and neighbors. "We are heartbroken by the tragic fire that occurred at our Owendale Mutual Housing Community and deeply saddened by the death of one of our residents. Our thoughts are with the resident's loved ones, neighbors, and everyone in the Owendale community who has been affected by this devastating event," said Mutual Housing California.
Structure fires in residential complexes pose significant risks, often involving complex investigations to determine causes such as electrical faults or human error. The Yolo County Coroner's office will handle identification and autopsy procedures, while police and fire investigators work to establish the fire's origin. Davis police Lt. Dan Beckworth stated that arson investigators from both the police and fire departments would conduct the probe. The ultimate cause and manner of death will be determined by the coroner's office.
Bryant was paralyzed and relied upon a wheelchair for mobility, said Tatiana Gerowitz, a former neighbor at Owendale. “He was a really nice guy,” Gerowitz said. She didn’t know Bryant well, but would exchange waves and pleasantries with him whenever they crossed paths. When they first met, she added, Bryant — who went by the nickname “K” — explained that his paralysis stemmed from being shot in the head during a gang-related incident. According to an article in the Woodland Daily Democrat, Bryant suffered the gunshot wound on Oct. 12, 2010, while visiting relatives in West Sacramento. He was living in San Jose at the time. “An argument over a stolen vehicle being driven by Bryant led to the shooting,” the article says, citing reports from West Sacramento police. “When officers arrived on scene, Bryant had a gunshot wound to the head and was transported to a nearby hospital.” Police arrested three suspects about a week later including the shooter, who was charged with attempted murder but ultimately pleaded no contest to assault and weapon-related charges. He was sentenced to state prison but has since been paroled. According to Gerowitz, Bryant harbored suspicions that “people from his past were out to get him.” Due to his paralysis, “he was being well cared for, and they didn’t think he should have been taken care of.” Bryant also had regular caretakers to assist him in meeting his daily needs, but no one else was at the apartment when the fire broke out, authorities said.
