Yuba City police are investigating a deadly shooting that claimed the lives of two young men and injured a third outside a convenience store late Wednesday night. Officers responded to reports of gunfire and a physical altercation at the 7-Eleven on Market Street just before 11 p.m.
Upon arrival, officers found an 18-year-old man with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a local hospital but later died. A second victim, a 21-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. A third man, 19, arrived at a hospital separately with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the hand.
According to the Yuba City Police Department, the preliminary investigation suggests an altercation outside the store escalated into gunfire. The California Department of Justice has been called in to assist with evidence processing.
"California DOJ criminalists are very good at what they do, and part of their jobs is to respond to crime scenes at the request of local law enforcement departments, no matter the day, or time of day. We thank them for their service, dedication and scientific expertise," said CSLEA President Alan Barcelona.
Yuba City, the county seat of Sutter County, is a community of about 70,000 residents. Violent crime is relatively low here compared to larger urban areas, making this shooting particularly shocking for residents. Local authorities have increased patrols in the area while the investigation continues.
Yuba City has seen sporadic gun violence, but multiple-fatality shootings are rare. In 2021, a triple shooting occurred in the city, but no fatalities were reported. The last fatal shooting in Yuba City was a single homicide in 2022. This incident marks one of the deadliest in recent memory.
Police are urging anyone with information to come forward. The investigation is active, and detectives are working to identify suspects. No arrests have been made as of now. The community is mourning the loss of two young lives.
