A vegetation fire, dubbed the Bear Fire, broke out east of Santa Margarita in a remote area of San Luis Obispo County on Tuesday afternoon. The fire ignited at approximately 3:07 p.m. near Black Bear Road and Big Basin Trail. Crews arrived to find flames spreading at a moderate to critical rate of spread, quickly surpassing 100 acres and threatening solar panels in the vicinity. By 3:47 p.m., the fire had grown to 180 acres with potential for 300 acres, and one outbuilding was involved with one structure threatened. The Incident Commander augmented the response, requesting additional engines and aircraft. Aggressive initial attacks included 14 engines, 4 dozers, 4 hand crews, and 3 water tenders. A "no-divert status" was temporarily issued for air tankers to ensure immediate and continuous aerial support to protect firefighter and civilian lives.
Within an hour, the fire expanded to over 300 acres, jumping 7 Mile Road, and prompting temporary evacuation orders for the sparsely populated region. The potential was estimated at 1,000 acres. By 4:30 p.m., the fire had grown to 300 acres. At 5:25 p.m., firefighters reported 20% containment. Forward progress of the fire was successfully stopped by 5:37 p.m. on July 7. By 6:06 p.m., all evacuation orders were lifted. By 6 p.m., the fire had grown to 543 acres and was 60% contained. By 8 p.m., firefighters had achieved 80% containment. The next day, containment increased to 95% by 11:31 a.m., and full containment was declared at 3:28 p.m. on July 8. The fire was contained at 542.8 acres, according to final mapping. Firefighters are currently focusing on reinforcing control lines and mopping up remaining hot spots.
The fire is located just northwest of the Carrizo Plain National Monument in the California Valley area, south of Highway 58. Firefighters utilized air tankers and helicopters to combat the flames. One outbuilding was reported damaged, but no injuries have been confirmed. Early in the incident, one additional structure and a nearby solar farm were threatened, but firefighters successfully defended them. There have been no reported civilian or firefighter injuries or fatalities. No school or major business closures have been reported. No widespread Public Safety Power Shutoffs or unplanned outages have been reported. Standard seasonal burn bans and fire restrictions remain in effect for San Luis Obispo County. Localized smoke may still be present; residents with respiratory conditions should remain indoors if they smell smoke. The response is being managed by the CAL FIRE San Luis Obispo Unit.
Mandatory evacuation orders were issued for Zones SLC-228, SLC-240, SLC-241, and SLC-299, covering the area south of Seven Mile Road, east of Elkhorn Road, and north of Arrowhead Trail. All mandatory evacuation orders were officially lifted at 6:07 p.m. on July 7. A temporary evacuation point was briefly established at the SLO County Fire Department Station 42, located at 13080 Soda Lake Road, but is no longer actively sheltering displaced residents as evacuations have been lifted. Residents can monitor their zone status via the Ready SLO website. Seven Mile Road was temporarily impacted on July 7 when the fire jumped the roadway, but no major ongoing road closures remain in effect today. Residents and commuters are advised to remain cautious in the area as fire crews and heavy equipment are still operating near the roadways.
