Nunamaker Road Fire Burns Near WA-261

Multiple agencies are battling the Nunamaker Road Fire, a 16,811-acre wildfire burning about 7 miles southeast of Khalotus in northeastern Franklin County. The fire prompted temporary closures on WA-261 earlier Saturday morning, but those closures have been lifted for now, according to Apple Valley News Now.

Canada Wildfire Forces Overnight Evacuations

More than 20,000 people were ordered to leave their homes overnight in western Canada as the Bald Range wildfire grew rapidly and raced toward towns along British Columbia's Okanagan Lake. The entire community of Summerland, home to about 12,000 people, was evacuated. About 8,000 people in and around nearby Peachland were also told to leave.

Erick Thompson, an emergency official with the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen, called it one of the "quickest-moving, fastest-growing" wildfires the region had experienced. He had to abandon the emergency operations center and evacuate his own family.

"You want to stay here and protect your home, but you also don't want to get caught in it," said resident Mike Elsinga.

Local California Context

While these fires are not burning in California, the scenes are familiar to many in San Bernardino County. Apple Valley residents know that dry vegetation, wind and heat can turn a small spark into a major blaze. Local emergency managers recommend keeping a go-bag ready, signing up for reverse 911 alerts and knowing at least two evacuation routes.

Background

Canada has endured increasingly destructive wildfire seasons in recent years, forcing mass evacuations and sending smoke across large parts of the United States. Washington and other Pacific Northwest states have also faced repeated summer fire emergencies. The current fires fit a pattern of extreme heat, drought and overgrown vegetation that fire crews continue to battle across the West.

Conclusion

The Nunamaker Fire's containment status is still unknown, and Canadian officials have not yet counted the destroyed homes. The situation remains fluid. For Apple Valley readers, this is a moment to review family emergency plans and stay alert to local fire conditions.
