A 20-year-old man from Santa Maria has died following a drowning incident at Lopez Lake in San Luis Obispo County. The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office confirmed the death of Nathan Martinez on July 1, 2026.
On June 30, around 4:15 p.m., deputies were dispatched to Lopez Lake after receiving a report about a swimmer in distress, according to a press release from the Sheriff's Office. Witnesses stated that Martinez was swimming with friends when he appeared to be in distress and sank beneath the surface.
A nearby boat was flagged down, and occupants located the swimmer and brought him aboard. CPR was immediately administered at the scene. Martinez was then transported to Arroyo Grande Community Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
Lopez Lake is a popular recreation area in San Luis Obispo County, attracting visitors from nearby communities such as Santa Maria and Arroyo Grande. Drowning incidents, while rare, highlight the importance of water safety, especially during summer months when lake use peaks. This drowning is the second reported at the lake this year. On March 22, Sergio Mendiola Garcia, 25, of Santa Maria, drowned while swimming at the lake, according to the sheriff's office.
The community mourns the loss of Nathan Martinez. Authorities urge all visitors to Lopez Lake and similar waterways to exercise caution, wear life jackets when appropriate, and swim only in designated areas. The investigation into the incident continues.
