Caswell County Sheriff's deputies were called to a home in the Prospect Hill community shortly before 8 a.m. Wednesday. When they arrived, they found four adults with gunshot wounds.
The home is located at 352 Brooks Road. Authorities said the shooting occurred around 8:30 a.m.
Three people were pronounced dead at the scene. The fourth was taken to Duke University Hospital. Authorities later said the dead included the suspect. In total, the suspect killed two family members and injured another before the incident ended.
The Caswell County Sheriff's Office is leading the investigation. They are being assisted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, and several local emergency agencies. Investigators remained on scene Wednesday processing evidence and conducting interviews.
During a press conference held this afternoon, authorities confirmed that four people were shot and three are deceased, and that all of the deceased were killed by a gun. In addition to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the response included the Prospect Hill Fire Department, Caswell County EMS, Caswell County Emergency Management, Caswell County 911, and the Person County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Tony Durden said he requested assistance from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.
KYMA reported that investigators were looking into whether previous calls for assistance had been made from the residence. ABC7's coverage did not mention this detail.
Responding to that report, Sheriff Durden said during the news conference that there was no evidence the family had previously reached out to the sheriff's office. He added, "This was an isolated incident and please keep the family in your prayers."
Officials stressed that the incident was contained to the property and there was no ongoing threat to the general public.
Authorities said all four people involved were adults and members of the same family. The identities of those who died and the injured person have not been released pending notification of family members.
This shooting took place in North Carolina, not California. ABC7 San Francisco carried the story as part of national U.S. news coverage. No California connection has been reported, and no California agencies are involved in the investigation.
Rural North Carolina communities often rely on county sheriff's offices, with state agencies stepping in on major investigations. This incident drew a multiagency response from local and state law enforcement.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone expecting more details on the suspect, the injured person, or the sequence of events will need to wait for a formal update from the Caswell County Sheriff's Office.
