The U.S. Navy has identified Cmdr. Gabriel Edwards, 42, as the missing sailor following an emergency helicopter landing in the Arabian Sea on July 1. The commanding officer of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 5 was aboard an MH-60S Sea Hawk when it went down at 3:30 a.m. Eastern Standard Time, along with three other sailors who were subsequently rescued. The Navy suspended search efforts after 102 hours of searching over 14,000 square miles of water.
The search involved ships and aircraft from two carrier strike groups, including the USS George H.W. Bush and USS Abraham Lincoln, as well as multiple destroyers and Air Force aircraft. Rear Adm. Todd Cimicata, commander of Carrier Strike Group 10, expressed condolences: “Gabe’s legacy as a husband, father, friend and fearless leader will never be forgotten.” The extensive operation covered 14,000 square miles but was halted on July 5. Capt. Matthew Lewis, commander of Carrier Air Wing 7, also paid tribute: “Commander Gabe Edwards was the epitome of selfless leadership, who dedicated himself to service and sacrifice for the last 20 years. Our deepest gratitude and sympathy go out to his family, who should know that Gabe led his squadron, the HSC-5 'Nightdippers,' with integrity and fortitude.”
While Edwards was a native of Oakland, Oregon, his squadron HSC-5 is based in Norfolk, Virginia, and was deployed in the Middle East. However, the news resonates in California, particularly in Kern County, where the community of Edwards Air Force Base is located, though Edwards himself was not directly connected to that base. The story highlights the sacrifices of military personnel, including those from California.
Edwards graduated from Norfolk State University in 2006 and earned his “Wings of Gold” in 2008. He served in various squadrons and assumed command of HSC-5 in July 2025. He was selected for promotion to captain by the Fiscal Year 2027 O-6 Line Officer Promotion Board. Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao directed his posthumous promotion. Edwards is survived by his wife, Rebecca, two children, and extended family. He spent two decades in naval aviation and logged more than 2,000 flight hours. He garnered several personal awards including the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
In a statement, Rebecca Edwards expressed gratitude for the search efforts and described her husband: “Gabe has dedicated his life to serving his country with honor, courage, and commitment. He led with humility, integrity, and compassion, always putting his people before himself. To those who served alongside him, he was a respected leader and mentor. To our family, he is the love of my life, an extraordinary father to his children, and the foundation of our home. His greatest joy was always his family.”
The Navy continues to investigate the cause of the emergency landing, which does not appear to be hostile. The loss of Cmdr. Edwards is deeply felt by the naval aviation community, and support services are being provided to the squadron and ship's crew. The incident occurred as tensions flared in the Middle East between the U.S. and Iran. The war between the two countries began on Feb. 28, when the U.S. and Israel launched a joint bombing campaign on the Middle Eastern country. Thousands have died in the fighting, including 13 U.S. service members.
