On Thursday morning, a man stole a pickup truck from a local dealership before breaking into a family's home and firing shots. Just days earlier, a sheriff's deputy shot and killed a pit bull that was violently attacking a man.
According to NBC4, the suspect stole a Toyota Tacoma from a car dealership and then entered a family's home in Lancaster, firing gunshots. No family members were injured. The man, who did not know the residents, demanded their car in what authorities described as an attempted armed carjacking. He eventually surrendered to deputies. The motive remains unclear, and it's unknown if the pickup belonged to the dealership.
On Monday, July 20, 2026, deputies responded to a 911 call about a dog attack in the 43200 block of 20th Street West, near West Avenue K8, at 9:50 a.m. Upon arrival, they found a pit bull "actively and viciously" attacking a man, approximately 40 years old, who was lying in a fenced front yard with a locked gate. The attacker was the victim's own pit bull. The man appeared unresponsive and was trapped inside the yard, preventing immediate access. A deputy managed to enter the yard and attempted to stop the attack using verbal commands, but when the dog did not stop, the deputy shot and killed it. No one else was wounded in the shooting. "Only the attacking dog was struck, immediately stopping the attack," the department said in a statement. The victim was given first aid until the arrival of Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics, who took him to a hospital. He was listed as stable Monday evening. The pit bull was the victim's own dog. L.A. County Animal Control responded and took custody of the dead dog. Lancaster Station Capt. Paul Bartlett praised the bravery and decisive action of the responding deputies, stating, "When our deputies arrived, they encountered a life-threatening emergency and acted without hesitation to save a man’s life. After stopping the attack, they immediately transitioned from addressing the threat to providing lifesaving medical care until firefighters arrived." The department also noted, "Any deputy-involved shooting can be a traumatic experience for those involved. The involved deputy has been provided access to the department’s available wellness and peer-support resources." The incident is under investigation.
While the victim was listed as stable, the extent of his injuries was not disclosed. The dog was pronounced dead at the scene. Bartlett additionally commended the deputies' "courage, training, and commitment," stating that their actions exemplify the service the department provides to the community daily.
Lancaster, in Los Angeles County, has experienced previous dog attack incidents. Last July, a man was fatally attacked by two pit bulls in a backyard; a deputy shot one dog to allow paramedics access, but the victim later died in the hospital.
