Micah Curtis Sykes, the 31-year-old son of Grammy-nominated opera singer Jubilant Sykes, was arraigned in a Los Angeles courtroom on Thursday and entered a plea of not guilty. He is accused of fatally stabbing his 71-year-old father at the family home in Santa Monica in December 2025.
According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, Micah Sykes was charged in case 25CJCF07984 with one felony count of murder. The complaint includes a special allegation that he used a deadly weapon and another allegation that he inflicted great bodily injury on a vulnerable victim who was 60 years of age or older. Because the victim was 71, the elder abuse enhancement applies. If convicted as charged, Sykes faces up to life in state prison.

At approximately 9:20 p.m. on Dec. 8, 2025, Micah Sykes allegedly attacked his father using a dagger, garden shears and a barbell. The victim's wife, who is also the defendant's mother, was home at the time and called emergency services. Jubilant Sykes was pronounced dead at the scene. The defendant was found and taken into custody by Santa Monica police, according to earlier reports.
The case was initially filed on Dec. 11, 2025, and arraignment was continued several times. On Thursday, Micah Sykes pleaded not guilty. The court scheduled a preliminary hearing setting for Sept. 2 in Department 34 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. Sykes remains held without bail, which prosecutors requested.
This case has drawn significant attention in Santa Monica and across Los Angeles County due to the victim's standing in the music world. He was nominated for a Grammy for best classical album for his performance in the 2009 recording of Leonard Bernstein's 'Mass.' He also appeared in the 2014 film 'Freedom' and on stage in 'Breath and Imagination.'
The arraignment moves the case forward but does not resolve it. Micah Sykes is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The preliminary hearing in September will determine whether enough evidence exists to proceed to trial.
