A Cottonwood man has been arrested for allegedly killing his sister and setting a fire next door on July 3, 2026, according to the Shasta County Sheriff's Office. The violent incident has shaken the quiet community.
On the evening of July 3, deputies responded to a call in Cottonwood, a small town in Shasta County. They found a woman dead at the scene. The suspect, identified as the victim's brother, was taken into custody. He is also accused of starting a fire at an adjacent property. Officials with the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office found the woman, 71-year-old Georgia Darlene Barker, after responding to a report of a gunshot victim in the 3300 block of Shane Lane in Cottonwood. Sheriff's deputies said they'd received information that George Charles Barker, age 68, of Cottonwood, had allegedly shot his sister and set a neighboring structure on fire. Deputies responding to the house found a dead woman inside. Evidence of gunshot wounds and "circumstances" indicated the woman's death was the result of a homicide, officials said. California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection firefighters extinguished the blaze at the neighboring home.
Officials said George Barker was located and detained on Cypress Drive in Cottonwood after allegedly being involved in a separate hit-and-run incident in Tehama County. The sheriff's office major crimes unit said they obtained a search warrant and collected evidence from the house. The Shasta County Coroner’s Office also responded to the scene and identified the victim as Georgia Darlene Barker. Based on evidence from their investigation, detectives established probable cause that George Barker was responsible for Georgia Barker’s death and also caused the fire at the neighboring house, according to the sheriff's office.
George Barker was also on felony probation out of Shasta County for making criminal threats and for using threats, violence or force to keep an executive officer from performing their lawful duties, a statement from the sheriff's office said. On Monday, George Barker was being held in the Shasta County Jail on $1.02 million bail on suspicion of murder, causing a fire of an inhabited structure, being a felon in possession of a firearm, DUI with a blood alcohol count of .08 or greater, driving on a suspended license and violation of probation, the sheriff's office said.
On July 8, 2026, George Barker appeared in Shasta County Superior Court and pleaded not guilty to charges connected to the killing. Prosecutors have charged him with murder, first-degree residential burglary, assault with a semi-automatic firearm, arson of another person’s property, recklessly causing fire to an inhabited structure, being a felon in possession of a firearm, driving under the influence, and driving with a suspended or revoked license. The case also includes several charge enhancements. A judge set bail in the murder case at $1 million, and Barker was ordered held without bail on a probation violation. He is scheduled to return to court at 8:30 a.m. July 15 in Department 24 for a setting hearing and to confirm his legal representation.
