Two Dead in East Oakland Crash That Also Hospitalizes Police Officer

Oakland, crime, traffic, accident

OAKLAND — Two men died Monday morning and a police officer was injured after a stolen vehicle crashed into a marked Oakland police patrol SUV in East Oakland, authorities said. The collision occurred around 11:10 a.m.

on East 12th Street near 29th Avenue. The officer was transported to a hospital by another officer; his condition was not immediately known early Monday afternoon.

The identities of the two deceased men have not been released pending notification of next of kin.

According to police, preliminary findings indicate the two men were driving a stolen Chevrolet Tahoe at high speed eastbound on East 12th Street when it struck the Oakland police SUV. An Oakland Housing Authority police officer had observed the vehicle driving erratically and attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the Tahoe sped away.

The officer did not pursue. The SUV continued eastbound and collided with the patrol vehicle, which was not involved in the initial call.

After the impact, the Tahoe traveled about a quarter-block before going out of control and overturning. Both occupants were ejected from the vehicle.

One landed on the center median beneath elevated BART tracks, and the other came to rest on the pavement in front of the overturned SUV. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Traffic investigators from the Oakland Police Department are leading the probe. East 12th Street was closed in both directions between 25th and 30th Avenues during the investigation.

The incident remains under review, and further details are expected as the inquiry progresses.
