President Donald Trump announced Saturday that a new nuclear deal with Iran is scheduled to be signed on Sunday, and that the Strait of Hormuz will immediately reopen to all shipping. In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote, "The Deal is scheduled to get signed tomorrow, and immediately after it is signed, the Hormuz Strait is OPEN TO ALL." He emphasized that the agreement represents a fundamentally different approach from the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action negotiated under former President Barack Obama, which Trump has long criticized as insufficient.
Trump stated that Iran no longer seeks a nuclear weapon and will not acquire one through purchase, development, or any other means. He also said no money would change hands as part of the agreement.
The president added that nuclear material remaining in Iran would eventually be removed and destroyed, though he provided no specifics on how that would be accomplished. "At the appropriate time, when all is calm, we will go in and get the Nuclear Dust, buried deep under the powerful sunken granite mountains, thanks to our beautiful B-2 Bombers and their brilliant pilots, and downblend and destroy it, whether in Iran, or the United States," Trump wrote.
He also issued a warning if the deal falls through: "Hopefully, this process will all work out quickly, easily, and smoothly. If it doesn’t, we have the ultimate alternative, hopefully never to be used again!" Trump described the relationship with Iran as "much different and better" than under previous administrations.
The announcement comes amid heightened security measures at public events, including the NBA Finals game Trump attended earlier this week in New York City.
