San Diego police discovered a woman dead and a man critically injured in the garage of a home in the 10100 block of Summerview Court on Friday night. Officers responded just before 7 p.m. after neighbors called 911 to report suspicious activity near the intersection of Summerview Court and Jade Coast Drive.
According to Lt. Chris Leahy of the San Diego Police Department, officers found a woman and man down inside the garage. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said she had apparent gunshot wounds. The man had apparent gunshot wounds to his upper torso and was taken by San Diego Fire-Rescue paramedics to a local trauma center, where he remained in critical condition.
Investigators determined the two were a husband and wife who lived at the residence. Their names have not been released, pending notification of family members. NBC San Diego reported the woman was in her 70s and the man in his 60s.
The SDPD Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation. Detectives are processing the scene and working to identify and interview witnesses, family members, and neighbors to determine the sequence of events. They are also collecting surveillance camera footage from nearby homes to establish a timeline. Detectives will continue to investigate the scene overnight and into Saturday morning.
Police said there does not appear to be any known danger to the public. Still, the shooting has shaken the quiet Mira Mesa neighborhood, which is located in the northern part of San Diego.
Mira Mesa is a residential community within the city of San Diego, bordered by Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and La Jolla. Violent crime in the area is relatively uncommon, making this fatal shooting stand out for local residents.
