Shasta County Issues Urgent Alert After Invasive Pest Found on Costco Grape Plant

Redding, agriculture, pest, health

The Shasta County Agricultural Commissioner's Office has confirmed the detection of a glassy-winged sharpshooter on a grape plant purchased at the Redding Costco. The discovery was made on June 5, 2026, and has prompted an urgent response to prevent the spread of this destructive pest.

The insect, a nymph approximately ¼ inch in size, was found on a plant bought from the store, which is located at 951 Dana Drive in Redding.

Additional monitoring traps have been placed around the affected property to track any potential spread or establishment of the pest. Residents who purchased grapevines from any Costco store between April 21, 2026, and May 21, 2026, are strongly urged to contact their County Agricultural Commissioner.

The Shasta County Agriculture Department is specifically asking anyone who bought a grape plant from the Redding Costco during that period to call (530) 224-4949 or email [email protected] to schedule an inspection and receive guidance on preventing further spread.

"Glassy-winged sharpshooters pose a serious threat to vineyards, agriculture, and backyard plants throughout Shasta County and nearby areas," said John Ingram, Shasta County Agricultural Commissioner. "These insects spread the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa, which causes Pierce's Disease and can kill grapevines and severely damage vineyards.

We need the community's help to prevent its spread."

As of June 15, 2026, only about 20% of the grape plants shipped to the Redding Costco have been accounted for. The commissioner's office is asking all Shasta County residents who purchased a grapevine between the listed dates to contact them immediately.

The glassy-winged sharpshooter is a known vector for Pierce's Disease, a bacterial infection that can devastate grapevines and other plants. Early detection and monitoring are critical to controlling the pest's spread and protecting local agriculture.
