A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed by Santa Ana police on Sunday night, June 14, after he allegedly stabbed his mother's boyfriend and refused to drop a knife when officers arrived. The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m.
in the 3400 block of South Main Street, according to Santa Ana police spokeswoman Officer Natalie Garcia. Officers responded to a report of a family disturbance inside an apartment.
The caller, a 53-year-old man, stated that his girlfriend's son was under the influence of drugs, vandalizing the apartment, and had stabbed him at least once. When officers arrived, they heard arguing from inside the apartment.
They entered and found the boy still armed with a knife. Despite multiple commands to drop the weapon, the boy refused, leading to at least one officer opening fire.
The boy was pronounced dead at the scene. The 53-year-old man was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and the boy's mother also sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at the scene.
Police reported that a knife and other weapons were found inside the apartment, though the types of additional weapons were not immediately disclosed. The Orange County District Attorney's office is investigating the shooting, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.
