A new nature-based enrichment program in Truckee is giving young children the opportunity to explore the forests and natural spaces around the area in a safe, fun, and child-centered way. The program, called Truckee Forest Friends, was created by Maggie Dana and Jeff Bosowski after the birth of their daughter 11 months ago.
Dana, who holds a degree in outdoor and adventure education and wilderness leadership and has worked as an herbalist for more than a decade, said the program brings together all of her experiences. She has also spent more than 10 years working with children.
The program aims to give children meaningful time outdoors, where they can learn through hands-on experiences, sensory play, movement, and discovery. Sessions will begin with sensory play before children head into the woods.
There, a small birdhouse will deliver a message, revealing the day's activity or craft. Children will then embark on a scavenger hunt to collect materials before completing a simple craft designed for young learners.
The remainder of the session will be dedicated to exploring the forest and engaging with the natural environment.
"Being out in nature is important because many children today are rushed to grow up and learn in more adult-oriented ways," Dana said.
The program is scheduled to begin July 11 and will initially be offered on Saturdays. An open house is planned for July 25 to introduce more families to the program.
As part of its pilot year, Dana and Bosowski are taking a gradual approach to expansion. They plan to introduce a weekday "Mommy and Me" class for younger children who may not yet be ready for greater independence.
The class will offer a less structured environment where children can play in a safe outdoor setting while parents connect or work.
The program incorporates flowers and herbs from their garden into crafts, herbal play dough, and other activities. Truckee Forest Friends encourages curiosity, creativity, confidence, and connection through outdoor play and exploration.
