The Great Nicobar Island, one of the world's most isolated islands, is on the brink of a dramatic transformation. The Indian government has launched a massive infrastructure project that will turn this remote island, located deep in the Indian Ocean, into a bustling township over the next three decades.

The project includes a civilian and military airport, a transshipment port, a power plant, and a new town designed to host up to a million tourists annually—nearly 100 times its current population. The development will cover an area twice the size of Manhattan and could feature high-rises, discos, and even theme parks.

Environmentalists and critics have raised serious concerns. They warn that farms, beaches, and hills will be swallowed up, and over a million trees will be felled.

The project threatens endangered species such as the leatherback turtle, the largest of all sea turtles, and the Nicobarese pigeon, the closest living relative of the dodo. Manish Chandi, a scholar who has studied the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago for over two decades, called the project "an open invitation to disaster," citing threats to natural resources, biodiversity, and indigenous communities.

The Indian government, however, insists that the project poses no threat to tribal groups or species and will enhance national security and economic development. The project is also seen as a strategic move to counter China's influence in the Indian Ocean, especially given the shipping blockade in the Strait of Hormuz.

Critics argue that the purported benefits are overstated and that the environmental damage will be severe. The project has faced legal challenges and widespread opposition from former bureaucrats, political opposition, academics, and indigenous communities.

For the indigenous Shompen tribe, who live in the island's rainforests, the project poses an existential threat. The government has proposed fencing off areas they inhabit to prevent contact with outsiders, but anthropologists say the project's maps include areas known to be their territory.

The Nicobarese people, who have lived in coastal villages for generations, are also worried. Their chief, Barnabas Manju, says officials promised the project would not affect their ancestral lands, but later maps showed part of the port would be built over them.

Despite the controversy, many settlers on the island support the project, hoping for jobs, roads, power, and internet. The government has promised over 50,000 jobs and a tourism boom.

However, the price of this development, as critics argue, may be too high for the island's unique ecosystems and indigenous cultures.
