California Primary Election Results: Governor and LA Mayor Races Still Undecided

California election officials continue to tally votes in the state's top two primary elections, as voters await the final results for governor and Los Angeles mayor. The primaries, held on June 2, use a nonpartisan "jungle primary" system where all candidates compete regardless of party, and the top two vote-getters advance to the November general election.

In the governor's race, former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, a Democrat, has secured enough votes to advance to the general election.

As of June 8, Becerra leads with over 1.88 million votes, followed by Republican Steve Hilton with over 1.79 million votes, and Democrat Tom Steyer with over 1.7 million votes. The race for second place remains too close to call, with Hilton holding a narrow lead over Steyer.

The winner will face Becerra in November to replace term-limited Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom.

In the Los Angeles mayoral race, incumbent Democratic Mayor Karen Bass has also secured a spot in the general election, leading with over 250,000 votes. The battle for second place has tightened, with Los Angeles City Councilwoman Nithya Raman pulling ahead of former reality TV star Spencer Pratt.

Raman now has over 196,000 votes, while Pratt has just over 193,000 votes. The shift occurred after a new ballot drop on June 7, erasing Pratt's earlier lead.

President Donald Trump has alleged without evidence that California's elections are "rigged," echoing baseless claims about his 2020 election loss. He abruptly ended an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press" on June 7 after being challenged on the topic.

California election officials have noted that the vote-counting process takes longer due to the prevalence of mail-in ballots, which must be postmarked by Election Day and received within seven days. Counties have up to 30 days to count provisional ballots.

As the counting continues, candidates and their campaigns are reacting. Hilton criticized the slow pace of vote counting, calling it "another example of the incompetence and uselessness of the state government." Steyer's campaign urged patience, stating, "We're going to wait until every ballot is counted.

We're going to give democracy time to work." Bass's campaign targeted Raman, while Raman highlighted her "long shot" bid, saying, "No one knew who I was; I was the last to enter this race."

More results are expected in the coming days as major counties release updated ballot counts.
