Local students among 5 killed in Santa Maria crash

Santa Maria, accident, traffic, police

A devastating weekend crash in Santa Maria claimed the lives of five people, including three local high school students, according to authorities. The collision occurred at approximately 1:40 a.m.

Sunday at the intersection of South Broadway and Miller Street, when a vehicle slammed into a traffic signal. Police initially reported four fatalities at the scene and two individuals hospitalized, but one of the hospitalized victims later died.

The condition of the sixth person involved has not been updated by police.

Kenny Klein, Public Information Officer for the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, noting it happened just before the final week of the school year. He confirmed that one victim attended Pioneer Valley High School, another was a student at Santa Maria High School, and the third was enrolled at Delta High School but had previously attended Pioneer Valley.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with their families, friends, and school communities," Klein said, adding that counseling services will be available throughout the week.

A memorial of flowers, balloons, candles, and pictures has been placed near the crash site. Police are investigating whether alcohol or speed contributed to the incident.

The names of the victims have not yet been released. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Santa Maria Police Department Traffic Unit at (805) 928-3781.

Community Reporter Crystal Bermudez has spoken with family and friends and will provide further details on KSBY News at 5 and 6 p.m. Monday.
