On Sep. 27, 2024, officers responded to a stabbing call at a Simi Valley home. They found Rivas leaving the house shirtless, with his upper torso covered in blood, and took him into custody. Inside, Tinoco was lying just inside the front door with multiple stab wounds to her face, abdomen, and arms.

Prosecutors said Rivas grabbed a kitchen knife during a domestic dispute and attacked Tinoco. Her five children witnessed the assault and were able to flee the home. A bent steak knife with blood on it was found on the living room floor. Blood was also found throughout the residence.

Tinoco was taken to Los Robles Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The Ventura County District Attorney's Office reported that four of her wounds were fatal.
