Deputy Tony Diaz Remembered 18 Years After Sacrifice in Dunnigan

Dunnigan, Woodland, crime, police, incident

Law enforcement agencies across Yolo County took to social media on Monday to honor the memory of Sheriff’s Deputy Jose Antonio “Tony” Diaz, who died in the line of duty 18 years ago. On June 15, 2008, Diaz, then 37 years old, located a reported stolen vehicle driven by a suspect who was believed to be driving under the influence with a child inside.

When the driver failed to yield during a traffic stop, Diaz initiated a pursuit that ended in Dunnigan. After the vehicle stopped at the intersection of County Road 5 and County Road 99W, Diaz approached the suspect and was shot.

He was rushed to Woodland Memorial Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries later that evening.

In a heartfelt social media post on Monday, the Woodland Police Department wrote, “Today, we honor the memory and sacrifice of Deputy Jose Antonio ‘Tony’ Diaz, who gave his life in the line of duty while serving the residents of Yolo County. Deputy Diaz’s courage, commitment to service, and ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Today, and every day, we remember his legacy and honor the profound impact he made on his family, colleagues, and the community he served.”

The Yolo County Sheriff’s Office, the same agency where Diaz served, also paid tribute to their fallen brother, acknowledging how his honor and dedication continue to inspire nearly two decades later. Community members and fellow officers alike reflected on Diaz’s bravery and the lasting void left by his sacrifice, emphasizing that his memory remains a guiding light for the department and the county he protected.
