Trump Convenes Cabinet Amid Push to End Iran War, Reopen Strait of Hormuz

Likely, politics, war, nuclear, ceasefire

President Donald Trump convened his Cabinet on Tuesday as his administration sought a breakthrough in ending the war with Iran, suggesting that a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz has been "largely negotiated." The meeting, originally scheduled for Camp David, was moved to the White House due to the possibility of bad weather.

The fragile ceasefire established in April was tested Monday when U.S. forces conducted what the Pentagon described as "self-defense" strikes on missile launch sites and mine-laying boats in southern Iran.

Iran condemned the strikes as a "grave violation of the ceasefire" and a sign of "bad faith and unreliability."

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Tuesday that talks on reopening the strait and extending the ceasefire are likely to continue for several more days. The administration believes the extended ceasefire period could be used to finalize the details of a nuclear agreement.

"He's either going to make a good deal or no deal," Rubio told reporters about Trump.

Under the potential agreement, Tehran would relinquish its stockpile of highly enriched uranium—a key Trump demand—in exchange for sanctions relief, according to two regional officials and one senior Trump administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive negotiations. One regional official with direct knowledge of the talks said the specifics of how Iran would give up the uranium would be negotiated over a 60-day period.

Some of the material would likely be diluted, while the rest could be transferred to a third country.

Trump wrote on Truth Social on Monday that Iran's enriched uranium would either be surrendered to the United States or destroyed. "The Enriched Uranium (Nuclear Dust!) will either be immediately turned over to the United States to be brought home and destroyed or, preferably, in conjunction and coordination with the Islamic Republic of Iran, destroyed in place or, at another acceptable location, with the Atomic Energy Commission, or its equivalent, being witness to this process and event," he wrote.

Earlier Monday, Trump also said countries negotiating for peace should join the Abraham Accords, the U.S.-brokered agreements from his first term aimed at normalizing diplomatic and economic relations with Israel.
