Tropical Storm Boris Forms Off Mexico's Southern Pacific Coast

Acapulco, Punta Maldonado, weather, storm, flooding, mudslides

Tropical Storm Boris formed on Monday off the southern Pacific coast of Mexico, bringing the threat of heavy rain, life-threatening flooding, and mudslides to parts of the states of Guerrero and Oaxaca, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.

As of Monday, the storm was located approximately 85 miles southeast of Acapulco and 50 miles southwest of Punta Maldonado. Boris had maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour and was moving slowly northeast at 2 mph.

Forecasters expect the storm to turn northward, with rainfall amounts of 4 to 10 inches predicted for coastal areas of Guerrero and Oaxaca through Monday night. The hurricane center warned that such rainfall could produce life-threatening flooding and mudslides, especially in areas with steep terrain.

A tropical storm warning was in effect from Laguna de Chacahua in Oaxaca to Tecpan de Galeana in Guerrero, with tropical storm conditions expected within 24 hours. Boris is the second named storm of the Pacific hurricane season, which began on May 15.

The first storm, Tropical Storm Amanda, formed on June 3 far out at sea and posed no threat to land. The Atlantic hurricane season began on June 1, but no cyclones have formed in that basin so far this year.

Residents in the warned areas are urged to monitor the storm's progress and prepare for potential flooding and mudslides.
