Treasury Department Confirms Plans for $250 Bill Featuring Donald Trump

Independence, politics, money

The Treasury Department has confirmed it is taking preliminary steps toward creating a $250 bill featuring President Donald Trump, anticipating the passage of stalled legislation in Congress. The bill, introduced by Representative Joe Wilson (R-S.C.), would direct the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) to produce the new denomination to mark the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding.

If passed and signed into law by Trump, it would represent an extraordinary recognition for a sitting U.S. leader, as Trump has sought to place himself at the center of the country's birthday celebrations.

A Treasury spokesperson stated that the BEP is conducting "appropriate planning and due diligence" in response to the active legislation. The move follows a Washington Post report that U.S.

Treasurer Brandon Beach, a Trump appointee, has been pushing the BEP to expedite the process. The report also indicated that the former BEP chief, Patricia Solimene, was reassigned after resisting pressure from Beach and his aide Mike Brown, who has since effectively assumed leadership of the bureau.

The Treasury Department did not comment on the leadership changes.

According to the Post, Beach provided the BEP with a design last fall featuring Trump's portrait—the same one used on banners adorning federal buildings in Washington—along with a 250th anniversary logo and Trump's signature, a design element that would differ from other U.S. currency.

British artist Iain Alexander told the Post he designed the bill and discussed it with the president. The legislation would override current federal law, which prohibits living individuals from appearing on U.S.

currency, by adding an exception for current or former presidents.

This initiative is the latest example of Trump expanding his personal brand in his official capacity since returning to the White House in 2025. The Treasury Department has already streamlined approval of a commemorative 250th anniversary coin featuring Trump, asserting it falls outside the prohibition on living presidents appearing on legal tender.

Additionally, banners with Trump's portrait have been hung on the Department of Justice and other federal buildings, and his appointees to the Kennedy Center governing board added his name to the national performing arts facility, a move being challenged in court.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is scheduled to appear at the White House on Thursday and may address the matter. The AP has not received comments from Beach or Alexander.
