Three Democrats Vie for Chance to Unseat GOP Incumbent in High-Stakes North County Congressional Race

In a pivotal primary election that will shape one of the most consequential battles for control of Congress, three Democratic candidates are making their final appeals to voters in North County's 48th Congressional District. The race is set against a backdrop of national redistricting disputes and a volatile political climate, with Republican San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond widely expected to secure a November berth.

Desmond, endorsed by President Donald Trump and backed by significant funding, has represented North County on the Board of Supervisors since 2018 and previously served as San Marcos mayor. His record includes securing better mental health resources, firefighting equipment, and shelter beds for homeless veterans and foster youths.

On the Democratic side, the field is crowded and uncertain. San Diego City Councilmember Marni von Wilpert, who grew up in Scripps Ranch, positions herself as a moderate with a strong record on public safety and labor rights.

She authored a 2021 city ban on ghost guns and has garnered endorsements from major labor unions, including the AFL-CIO, SEIU, and the California Teachers Association. Von Wilpert emphasizes her roots in North County and her commitment to fighting economic inequality by expanding bargaining rights and reversing Trump-era tax cuts.

Palm Springs economist Brandon Riker is betting on a grassroots campaign, having spent nearly $1.9 million—much of it from his personal fortune—to amplify his message of reducing economic inequality. Ammar Campa-Najjar, a Navy Reserve officer and former candidate for Congress and Chula Vista mayor, is running on a progressive platform that includes a billionaire tax and single-payer health care.

He has faced significant outside spending against him, including $7.3 million from super PACs and pro-Israel groups, which have attacked his shifting policy positions and alleged misuse of his military title. Campa-Najjar, who lives outside the district, argues that his anti-establishment message resonates with voters tired of local corruption.

The race has drawn national attention due to recent court rulings that have weakened Democratic redistricting gains, making every pickup critical. Political analysts note that while Trump's low approval ratings could hurt Republicans, Desmond's local roots and incumbency give him an edge.

The primary concludes Tuesday, with the top two candidates advancing to the general election.
