Teen Hiker Dies of Heat-Related Illness on Bright Angel Trail in Grand Canyon National Park

An 18-year-old male hiker died on June 3, 2026, after suffering a heat-related illness on the Bright Angel Trail in Grand Canyon National Park, according to the National Park Service. The incident occurred near Havasupai Gardens, approximately one mile north of the Tapeats Narrows, in a remote area about 30 feet below the trail along Garden Creek.

The Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received reports of the hiker experiencing heat-related symptoms at around 1:40 p.m. that day.

Park rangers responded quickly and coordinated a helicopter rescue, but lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful. The victim was attempting a day hike from the South Rim to the Colorado River and back via the Bright Angel Trail, a strenuous route known for extreme temperatures and limited shade.

The Coconino County Medical Examiner's Office is investigating the death, and the hiker's name has not been released pending notification of next of kin. The National Park Service urges all hikers to prepare for extreme heat, carry ample water, and avoid hiking during the hottest parts of the day.
