Suspect Dead After 15-Hour Hostage Standoff in Downtown Bakersfield

Bakersfield, crime, police, incident

A 15-hour hostage standoff in downtown Bakersfield ended Wednesday morning when FBI agents fatally shot the suspect, identified as Anthony Scott Searles-Harris, a 41-year-old registered sex offender and dishonorably discharged Army veteran. The incident began around 1:30 p.m.

Tuesday at an office building on 17th Street, which houses a Chase Bank branch on the ground floor and offices of the Kern County Superintendent of Schools on upper floors. Searles-Harris took 10 people hostage, tying up five of them and apparently strapping explosives to several, according to authorities.

Bakersfield police and over 100 FBI personnel, including SWAT teams, bomb technicians, and hostage rescue teams, negotiated with him overnight. They successfully freed two hostages, speaking with him through a door and via a hostage's cell phone until the battery died.

The standoff ended around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday when the FBI shot and killed Searles-Harris.

Authorities cited his erratic behavior and health concerns for one hostage—a diabetic woman—as reasons for the tactical intervention. All hostages were ultimately uninjured.

"We are incredibly relieved to report that all of the hostages that were involved have been safely recovered and reunited with their families," said Bakersfield Assistant Police Chief Jeremy Blakemore. Kern County Superintendent of Schools John Mendiburu praised the composure of employees and thanked responding agencies.

Searles-Harris's motives remain unknown, though he requested documents from previous legal cases during negotiations. The investigation is ongoing.
