Detectives from the Shasta County Sheriff's Office, with assistance from the Marina Police Department, arrested 28-year-old Jordan Newton Moore on Sunday in Marina, Monterey County, in connection with the homicide of 87-year-old Thomas Anthony Cuneo. The Marina Police Department announced the arrest on Monday, highlighting the collaborative effort between the two agencies.
On June 5, Shasta County deputies responded to a welfare check at a residence in the 7100 block of Kaysie Rae Court in Shingletown, Shasta County, after a reporting party expressed concern about not seeing Cuneo for several weeks. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a deceased adult male inside the home.
The Shasta County Sheriff's Office stated in a media release that the circumstances at the scene, including evidence of significant trauma, indicated the death was the result of a homicide.
A subsequent autopsy conducted on June 12 confirmed that the victim had suffered multiple stab wounds, and the cause of death was officially ruled a homicide. Detectives determined that Cuneo lived at the residence with Moore, who served as his live-in caregiver.
Witness statements indicated that Moore had not been seen at the residence for several weeks and that Cuneo's vehicle was also missing.
On Friday, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Moore on charges of first-degree murder. The following Sunday, with the assistance of the Marina Police Department, Moore was located and arrested in Marina.
He is currently booked in the Monterey County Jail, pending extradition to Shasta County.
The Marina Police Department released a statement emphasizing the professionalism, investigative skills, and commitment to public safety demonstrated by their personnel. They noted that through strong partnerships and effective information sharing, law enforcement agencies can work together to bring offenders to justice and help keep communities safe.
