A dramatic police pursuit in Culver City ended with multiple injuries after a suspect fleeing a hit-and-run crash struck four pedestrians and a police officer. The chase began when officers responded to a report of a collision involving a driver who fled the scene.
According to authorities, the suspect vehicle was spotted a short time later, and when officers attempted to make a traffic stop, the driver sped away, initiating a pursuit through residential and commercial areas.
During the chase, the suspect lost control of the vehicle and plowed into a group of pedestrians on a sidewalk near the intersection of Washington Boulevard and Motor Avenue. A Culver City police officer who had exited his patrol car to deploy spike strips was also struck by the fleeing vehicle.
The officer sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The four pedestrians, whose identities have not been released, suffered a range of injuries, from minor to serious, and were also taken to area hospitals.
The suspect was eventually apprehended after crashing the vehicle a few blocks away. Police have not yet released the suspect's name or confirmed the charges being considered.
The incident caused significant traffic disruptions in the area, with several streets closed for hours as investigators processed the scene. Culver City police are continuing to investigate the circumstances leading up to the pursuit and the hit-and-run that triggered it.
New details have emerged indicating that the suspect had carjacked a vehicle at knifepoint in downtown Los Angeles around 7 p.m. before leading police on a wild pursuit.
The driver allegedly targeted pedestrians, driving on the wrong side of the road at times, according to police spokesperson Jennifer Atenza. Additional reports of pedestrians being struck were received at Braddock Drive and Sepulveda Boulevard, Culver Boulevard and Canfield Avenue, and Le Bourget Avenue and Culver Boulevard.
The chase ended when the suspect crashed into a McDonald's parking lot and attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended.
