California State Senator Cervantes has issued a statement in response to a state audit that uncovered significant transparency and accountability failures in the Riverside Unified School District’s STEM Education Center project. The audit, released on June 10, 2026, confirmed many of the concerns raised by community members regarding the use of Measure O bond funds.
The audit found that inconsistent reporting and documentation of fund allocations made it difficult for both the school board and the public to understand the project’s financial commitments. Specifically, the report highlighted a lack of clear records, limited public access to information, inconsistent communication, and unreliable documentation regarding the use of taxpayer money.
According to the State Auditor, these shortcomings contributed to increased costs, project delays, and a significant erosion of public trust. Senator Cervantes emphasized that the audit validates the concerns raised by the Riverside community and underscores the need for greater accountability in the management of publicly funded projects.
“One of my responsibilities as a member of the Legislature is to provide oversight and ensure accountability in the use of public funds,” Cervantes said. “When concerns are brought forward by the community, it is my duty to seek answers and advocate for transparency.
Now that the audit has provided those answers, I am hopeful that the district will implement the Auditor’s recommendations for stronger oversight, clear communication, and consistent documentation.”
The senator expressed optimism that implementing these recommendations will help restore public confidence, strengthen accountability, and ensure the transparency that students, families, taxpayers, and the community deserve.
