In a historic move, the Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) Board of Education has formally renamed Rosita Elementary School to Frank and Irene Palomino Elementary School. The decision, approved unanimously in a 4-0 vote during a board meeting on Tuesday night, honors the Palomino family's pivotal role in the landmark Mendez et al.
case, which fought against school segregation and advanced educational equality in California. Trustee Bob Harden was absent from the vote.
The school will be commonly referred to as Palomino Elementary School, serving as a tribute to Frank and Irene Palomino, who were prominent local advocates against segregation. Their efforts were instrumental in shaping the Garden Grove community's history and ultimately contributed to equal educational opportunities across the state.
District officials collaborated with community members, staff, and the Palomino family over several months to develop the renaming proposal.
Trustee Walter Muneton expressed gratitude to the family during the meeting, highlighting the educational significance of the change. "There's an opportunity to teach future generations about the power of courage, community, and standing up for what is right," Muneton said.
"I'm proud that we are taking this historic step tonight." Board members emphasized that the family's actions paved the way for generations of students and stressed the importance of preserving their history.
The renaming not only honors the Palomino family but also serves as an educational opportunity for students, staff, and families to learn about local civil rights history. The district plans to hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony to commemorate the new name, with family members expressing excitement and gratitude.
Veronica Palomino said she felt "grateful, honored, and proud for keeping our family history alive" following the board's decision.
The change marks a significant step in recognizing the contributions of local figures in the fight for educational equality in Orange County.
