Southern California Rattlesnake Surge: Hiker Rescued in Montecito as Attacks Rise

Southern California is facing an aggressive early rattlesnake season, with multiple bites reported. A female hiker was rescued on April 12 from the Buena Vista Trail in Montecito after being bitten and using a whistle to signal for help.

This marks at least the seventh bite in the region since mid-March, fueled by a record heat wave pushing snakes into populated areas. Two fatalities have occurred this year: a mountain biker in Irvine and a hiker in Ventura County.

With snakes more active, hikers and residents are advised to stay vigilant, give snakes space, and know emergency procedures.
