Norovirus Outbreak Spreads Across Most of the US

A highly contagious vomiting virus, identified as norovirus, is spreading across most of the United States, with hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail in Southern California being among the first to report cases. The outbreak has particularly affected those traveling through the La Cresta area in Riverside County, where multiple hikers have fallen ill with severe gastrointestinal symptoms.

Health officials are urging the public to take precautions, as the virus can spread rapidly through contaminated surfaces, food, and direct contact. Symptoms include sudden onset of vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps, which typically last one to three days.

There is no specific treatment, and prevention relies on frequent handwashing, disinfecting surfaces, and staying home when sick. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is monitoring the situation and advises anyone experiencing symptoms to hydrate well and seek medical attention if dehydration occurs.

The outbreak serves as a reminder of the importance of hygiene, especially in crowded or shared spaces like trails, campgrounds, and public facilities.
