A tense situation unfolded Thursday afternoon near the Islamic Center of San Diego in the Clairemont neighborhood when police discovered a Nazi flag and a suspicious canister inside a vehicle. The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) reported that officers already stationed at the Islamic Center noticed a suspicious vehicle around 11:40 a.m.
near Derrick Drive and Genesee Avenue. They stopped the vehicle and detained the driver, at which point they observed the Nazi flag and a canister that appeared suspicious.
The Metro Arson Strike Team was called to evaluate the item, and the Joint Terrorism Task Force was immediately alerted and is collaborating with SDPD on the investigation.
As a precaution, nearby shopping centers were evacuated, including a Home Depot, a Target, and a DMV location, along with several other businesses. Residents in the area were asked to shelter in place.
Photos from the scene showed the San Diego Fire-Rescue Bomb Squad outside Best Pizza & Brew, with police tape blocking multiple roadways. Police have stated that there is no active threat to the Islamic Center, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Authorities are still working to determine the contents of the canister.
The incident has raised concerns in the community, but officials have assured the public that there is no immediate danger. The SDPD continues to investigate, and updates are expected as more information becomes available.
This is a developing story, and details may change as the investigation progresses.
