Judge Sentences Five Gang Members in 2023 Lookout Shootings: Four Get Life Without Parole

Pasadena, Rancho Palos Verdes, crime, court, violence

Four reputed gang members were sentenced to life without the possibility of parole, and a fifth received a 30-year-to-life sentence in Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday, June 18, for their roles in a series of violent robberies and murders at scenic lookouts in Pasadena and Rancho Palos Verdes in 2023. The five defendants were convicted on June 2 of at least one count of murder each, with three convicted of multiple counts, in connection with the July 22, 2023, killing of 32-year-old Jessie Munoz and the July 24, 2023, slayings of Jorge Ramos, 36, and Taylorraven Whittaker, 26.

Prosecutors said the defendants, all gang members, specifically targeted scenic lookouts to rob victims of their cellphones and wallets, then divided the stolen items among themselves and other gang members. The sentences were handed down by Judge Ronald S.

Coen, who remarked, "It's extremely troubling, the casual slaughter the defendants engaged in. You showed no mercy, you'll get no mercy."

Marco Antonio Hernandez, 21, was the only defendant convicted in all three murders. He received a life sentence without parole.

Rossel Jose Hernandez-Ponce, 24, and Wendy Sarai Cerritos, 23, were each convicted of two counts of murder in the deaths of Ramos and Whittaker and also received life without parole. Abraham Ernesto Alvarenga Cortez, 23, was convicted in the murder of Munoz and sentenced to life without parole.

Luis Ventura, 27, was convicted only in Munoz's death and, because his murder charge did not include special-circumstance allegations, received a 30-year-to-life sentence.

All five defendants were convicted of conspiracy to commit robbery. Hernandez, Ventura, and Cortez were also convicted of two counts of robbery, while Hernandez, Hernandez-Ponce, and Cerritos were convicted of two counts of attempted robbery.

The shootings occurred over two days in July 2023, targeting victims at scenic overlooks in Pasadena and Rancho Palos Verdes, both located in Los Angeles County. The case remains under investigation, and authorities have not ruled out additional charges.
