NASCAR Legend Kyle Busch Dies at 41 from Sepsis Complications

Concord, health, medicine

Kyle Busch, the two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and one of the most decorated drivers in the sport's history, died last week at the age of 41 due to complications from bacterial pneumonia that led to sepsis, according to his death certificate obtained by the Associated Press. The certificate, filed in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, listed the manner of death as natural and noted that Busch had been experiencing symptoms of bacterial pneumonia for days to weeks before sepsis set in.

He was cremated in Mooresville, North Carolina, following an autopsy.

Sepsis, a life-threatening medical emergency, occurs when the body's immune system overreacts to an infection, causing widespread inflammation, microscopic blood clots, and leaky blood vessels that can damage tissues and organs. Despite his illness, Busch had remained active, racing at Watkins Glen on May 10 where he complained of a sinus cold and requested medical attention after the race.

He went on to win the Truck Series race at Dover and finished 17th in the All-Star race just five days before his death. He also attended the opening of a go-kart track with his 11-year-old son, Brexton.

Busch was preparing for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway when his family announced he would not compete due to a severe illness. On May 20, while testing in a Chevrolet racing simulator in Concord, he became unresponsive and was taken to a hospital in Charlotte.

An emergency 911 call placed that afternoon reported that Busch was experiencing shortness of breath, felt very hot, thought he might pass out, and was coughing up blood. The caller described Busch lying on a bathroom floor inside the complex, awake but in distress.

Emergency responders were directed to turn off their sirens upon arrival. Busch was transported to a hospital, where he died the following day.

NASCAR CEO Steve O'Donnell called Busch a certain first-ballot Hall of Famer and noted that there was discussion about adding him to this year's Hall of Fame class, even though the selection process had already been completed. Busch's career included a record 234 wins across NASCAR's top three national series, with most of his success coming at Joe Gibbs Racing before he moved to Richard Childress Racing.
