Yosemite's Nevada Fall: Man's Fatal Plunge Under Investigation

Updated: CaliforniaToday Mariposa County

The National Park Service is investigating an incident in which a 23-year-old man reportedly fell from Yosemite National Park's nearly 600-foot Nevada Fall on June 20. A Yosemite spokesperson confirmed that emergency personnel responded to the incident, which remains under investigation, but provided minimal additional details.

According to a Reddit user, a group of friends was swept away by the current at the top of Nevada Fall, located below the granite dome known as Liberty Cap. The user wrote that a bystander handed a branch to one person, who was rescued, but the other individual could not grab hold and was carried over the waterfall.

Another Reddit user reported witnessing a recovery operation near the Mist Trail, which leads up to the fall. The user described seeing people in yellow shirts, believed to be emergency responders, rolling a body bag down the granite steps on an off-road stretcher, forcing hikers to step aside.

In 2018, a teenager from Israel died after falling from the same waterfall while attempting to take a selfie at the edge. The incident highlights the dangers of Yosemite's iconic waterfalls, which attract millions of visitors each year.

The investigation into the latest incident continues, with authorities urging caution near water features in the park.
