Lesser Fire Near Newbury Park High School Quickly Contained

A vegetation fire that ignited just northwest of Newbury Park High School in Thousand Oaks on May 29 was quickly stopped by firefighters. The blaze, named the Lesser Fire, was first reported around 8:51 a.m.

as a 1-acre fire in brush near a residential neighborhood off Lesser Drive. The Ventura County Fire Department responded and found the fire had grown to about half an acre with light to rapid fuel.

Evacuation orders were issued for homes on Barcelona Place and San Telmo Circle, but were later downgraded to warnings. By 9:20 a.m., forward progress of the fire had been halted as crews established a wet line around the perimeter, according to fire department spokesperson Andy VanSciver.

No injuries or structural damage were reported. The fire comes just over a week after the Sandy Fire in Simi Valley and the Santa Rosa Island Fire in the Channel Islands.
