A Las Vegas Metropolitan Police officer was killed in the line of duty Tuesday after an exchange of gunfire with an armed suspect. The officer has been identified as Austin Abdelnabi, a 30-year-old Marine Corps veteran and a member of LVMPD since 2023.
Officers were called to a business on East Tropicana Avenue after reports of an armed person who appeared to be intoxicated and was waving a firearm. When officers confronted the suspect, gunfire was exchanged, according to officials.
Abdelnabi was shot and later died at the hospital. The suspect was also pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
During a visit to Las Vegas, President Donald Trump paid tribute to Abdelnabi. "Austin died a hero, and he will never be forgotten," Trump said.
Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill also honored Abdelnabi's decorated service record on Wednesday, a day after the shooting. McMahill praised the officer's commitment and sacrifice.
Abdelnabi joined LVMPD in 2023 and also served in the U.S. Marine Corps. His death marks a significant loss for the department and the broader law enforcement community.
