A Beaumont man will spend five decades in prison for a murder that happened during a vehicle burglary. The sentence came Tuesday through a plea agreement that spared the victim's family a lengthy trial.
According to the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office, Turner and two other men targeted a vehicle owned by 39-year-old Ebonie Gilbert in October 2024. They tried to disable the Ring doorbell camera at her front door while one of them got into her vehicle, which was parked in her driveway.
The doorbell camera captured Gilbert leaving her home and confronting the three men. During that confrontation, Turner shot her in the back multiple times, prosecutors said.
Assistant District Attorney Tommy L. Coleman said the killing happened during a burglary that turned into a robbery, making it capital murder. That charge could have led to the death penalty if the case went to trial.
Turner took a plea deal instead. He was sentenced to 50 years in prison and will be eligible for parole after serving half of that sentence.
Coleman said the plea will spare Gilbert's family from an agonizing trial and expressed hope that the remaining co-defendant's case could be resolved similarly.
