LA Health Services Relocates Three Community Health Centers Amid $700 Million Funding Cuts

Antelope, Torrance, East Los Angeles, health, money, politics

In response to an unprecedented budget crisis driven by federal and California state changes to healthcare funding, LA Health Services has announced the relocation of three community health centers to protect patient care. The changes to Medicaid and Medi-Cal are expected to reduce the health system's budget by over $700 million by 2029, forcing difficult operational decisions.

While no health centers have been closed, services at Antelope Valley Health Center will move to High Desert Regional Health Center and South Valley Health Center on June 1, 2026. Torrance Health Center services will relocate to Bellflower Health Center on the same date, and East LA Health Center services will shift to Edward R.

Roybal Comprehensive Health Center on July 1, 2026. These relocations are part of the Save Our Safety Net (SOS) initiative, which has already saved over $230 million through measures such as reducing reliance on registry and contract staff, tighter overtime management, a hiring freeze, standardized labs and supplies, reduced IT subscriptions, expanded telehealth, and improved care coordination to lower emergency visits and hospitalizations.

LA Health Services, the second-largest public health system in the nation, operates four hospitals and more than 20 community health centers, serving all 10 million Los Angeles County residents regardless of ability to pay, insurance, or immigration status. The health system warns that without state or federal intervention, further funding reductions may force additional operational changes, potentially impacting access to primary, preventive, specialty, ongoing, and emergency care for the county's most vulnerable populations.
