House Passes War Powers Resolution to Halt Iran Conflict

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House of Representatives approved a war powers resolution on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, that would halt U.S. military action against Iran, defying President Donald Trump as a handful of Republicans joined with Democrats to end the three-month-long conflict that has reshaped politics at home and abroad.

The vote was 215-208, sparking cheers in the House chamber. House Speaker Mike Johnson had previously tried to block the measure, shutting down floor action two weeks ago when it was on the verge of approval, but opposition to the war has grown as the conflict drags on and Trump struggles to negotiate a resolution.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York called the war "reckless and costly," noting it has cost American taxpayers over $100 billion and left the U.S. in a weaker position relative to Iran.

This marks the fourth time the House has attempted to curb the war, and the first successful passage. The Senate advanced its own war powers resolution last month with support from a handful of GOP senators breaking ranks with the president.

The war, which began with U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, has led to gas price spikes and inflationary pressure, as Iran disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital channel for global oil and natural gas. A ceasefire declared in April remains fragile, with talks for a durable end complicated by Israel's broadening conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The House resolution is symbolic and would not immediately stop the war, but it would provide a legal step against further military action. It now goes to the Senate, where four Republican senators previously joined Democrats in advancing a similar measure.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that passing the resolution could signal to Iran that the administration's hands are tied, undermining negotiations. The House is also voting on a Democratic-led effort to authorize U.S.

support for Ukraine's military operations against Russia and reconstruction aid. Additionally, the House is expected to consider a war powers resolution to block U.S.

action in Lebanon. The administration has argued that since a ceasefire was declared, hostilities have ceased, but military strikes continue to flare.
